« Voici l'époux qui vient. » (Mt 25,6)

Notre époux, prononce ce mot. En latin le mot « venit » contient en lui deux temps du verbe : le passé et le présent ; ce qui ne l'empêche pas de viser aussi le futur. C'est pourquoi nous allons considérer trois avènements chez notre époux.

Lors du premier avènement, il se fit homme à cause de l'homme, par amour. Le second avènement a lieu tous les jours, souvent et en mainte occasion, dans chaque coeur qui aime, accompagné de nouvelles grâces et de nouveaux dons, selon la capacité de chacun. Dans le troisième avènement, l'on considère celui qui aura lieu le jour du Jugement ou à l'heure de la mort...

Le motif pour lequel IL a créé les anges et les hommes est sa bonté infinie et sa noblesse, puisqu'il a voulu le faire afin que la béatitude et la richesse qu'il est lui-même soient révélées aux créatures douées de raison, et que celles-ci puissent le savourer dans le temps, et jouir de lui au delà du temps, dans l'éternité.

Le motif pour lequel IL s'est fait homme est son amour insaisissable et la détresse des hommes, car ils étaient altérés par la chute du péché originel et incapables de s'en guérir. Mais le motif pour lequel IL a accompli toutes ses oeuvres sur terre non seulement selon sa divinité mais aussi selon son humanité est quadruple : à savoir son divin amour, qui est sans mesure ; l'amour créé, ou charité, qu'il possédait dans son âme, grâce à l'union avec le Verbe éternel et grâce au don parfait que lui en a fait son Père ; la grande détresse en laquelle se trouvait la nature humaine ; enfin, l'honneur de son Père. Voilà les motifs de l'avènement, notre époux, et de toutes ses oeuvres.

“Rallegratevi nel Signore, sempre; ve lo ripeto ancora, rallegratevi” (Fil 4,6). Doppia gioia a motivo di un doppio beneficio: la prima e la seconda venuta. Dobbiamo rallegrarci perché il Signore, nella sua prima venuta, ci ha portato ricchezze e onore. Dobbiamo rallegrarci ancora perché, nella sua seconda venuta ci darà “lunghi giorni in eterno senza fine” (Sal 20,5). Secondo i Proverbi,  “lunghi giorni sono nella sua destra e nella sua sinistra ricchezze e onore” (3,16). La sinistra è la prima venuta, con le sue ricchezze gloriose, l’umiltà e la povertà, la pazienza e l’obbedienza. La destra è la seconda venuta, con la vita eterna.

 

Della prima venuta, Isaia parla in questi termini: “Svegliati, svegliati, rivestiti di forza, o braccio del Signore. Svegliati come nei giorni antichi, come tra le generazioni passate. Non hai tu forse fatto a pezzi il superbo, non hai trafitto il drago? Forse non hai prosciugato il mare, le acque del grande abisso e non hai fatto della profondità del mare una strada perché vi passassero i redenti? (Is 51, 9-10). Il braccio del Signore, è Gesù Cristo, Figlio di Dio, per mezzo di lui e in lui Dio ha fatto tutte le cose... O braccio del Signore, o Figlio di Dio, svegliati; vieni a noi, dalla gloria di tuo Padre, prendendo la nostra carne. Rivestiti della forza della divinità, per lottare contro “il principe di questo mondo” (Gv 12,31) e per “scacciare l’uomo forte”, tu che sei quello “più forte di lui” (Lc 11,21-22). Svegliati per riscattare il genere umano, come hai liberato, nei giorni antichi, il popolo d’Israele dalla schiavitù dell’Egitto... Hai prosciugato il Mar Rosso; ciò che hai fatto, lo farai ancora..., come hai tracciato nelle profondità degli inferi una strada perché vi passassero i riscattati.

Della seconda venuta il Signore parla in questi termini nel profeta Isaia: “Farò di Gerusalemme – la Gerusalemme celeste, costituita dagli angeli e dagli uomini – una gioia, del suo popolo un gaudio. Io esulterò di Gerusalemme, godrò del mio popolo. Non si udranno più in essa voci di pianto” (Is 65, 18-19), perché come sta scritto altrove: “Il Signore asciugherà le lacrime su ogni volto” (Is 25,8).

"The bridegroom is coming" (Mt 25,6). Christ our Bridegroom speaks this word in Latin: «venit». This word could be in either the present or the perfect tense and so contains within itself two different times: the time which is past and that which is present. In addition, Christ means the time which is still to come. For this reason we shall have· to consider three comings of our Bridegroom Jesus Christ.

In the first of these comings he became a human being out of love for us. The second coming takes place daily in many and various ways in every loving heart, for he comes with new gifts and new graces according to the measure in which each person is able to receive them. The third coming is that on the Day of Judgment or at the hour of death... 

The reason God created angels and human beings was his fathomless goodness and nobility. He wished the blessedness and richness that he is in himself to be revealed to rational creatures so that they might savor him in this temporal world and enjoy him beyond the temporal order in eternity.

The reason God became a human being was his incomprehensible love and the need of all persons, for they had been corrupted through original sin and could do nothing of themselves to change their condition. But there were four reasons why Christ, according to both his divinity and his humanity, performed all his works on earth: first, his divine love, which is immeasurable; secondly, that created love which is called charity and which he had in his soul through his union with the eternal Word and through the perfect gifts which he received from his Father; thirdly, the great need of human nature; and fourthly, the honor of his Father. These are the reason for the coming of Christ our Bridegroom and for all that he did.
