Par respect, soyez soumis les uns aux autres ; les femmes, à leur mari ; car, pour la femme, le mari est la tête.

 

Eh bien ! qu'il en soit toujours de même pour les femmes à l'égard de leur mari. Vous, les hommes, aimez votre femme : il a aimé, il s'est livré pour elle ; il voulait la rendre sainte en la purifiant par le bain et la vie ; il voulait se la présenter à lui-même, resplendissante, sans tache, ni ride, ni aucun défaut ; il la voulait irréprochable. C'est comme cela que le mari doit aimer sa femme : comme son propre corps. Celui qui aime sa femme s'aime soi-même. Jamais personne n'a méprisé son propre corps : au contraire, on le nourrit, on en prend soin. Comme dit l'Écriture : A cause de cela, l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s'attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu'un.

Ce mystère est grand...

Siate sottomessi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo.

Le mogli siano sottomesse ai mariti come al Signore; 
il marito infatti è capo della moglie, come anche Cristo è capo della Chiesa, lui che è il salvatore del suo corpo. 
E come la Chiesa sta sottomessa a Cristo, così anche le mogli siano soggette ai loro mariti in tutto. 
E voi, mariti, amate le vostre mogli, come Cristo ha amato la Chiesa e ha dato se stesso per lei, 
per renderla santa, purificandola per mezzo del lavacro dell'acqua accompagnato dalla parola, 
al fine di farsi comparire davanti la sua Chiesa tutta gloriosa, senza macchia né ruga o alcunché di simile, ma santa e immacolata. 
Così anche i mariti hanno il dovere di amare le mogli come il proprio corpo, perché chi ama la propria moglie ama se stesso. 
Nessuno mai infatti ha preso in odio la propria carne; al contrario la nutre e la cura, come fa Cristo con la Chiesa, 
poiché siamo membra del suo corpo. 
Per questo l'uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà alla sua donna e i due formeranno una carne sola. 
Questo mistero è grande; lo dico in riferimento a Cristo e alla Chiesa!

Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. 
For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. 
As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her 
to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, 
that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 
So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 
For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, 
because we are members of his body. 
"For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 
This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
